I just sent this to the OGC TC, Context RWG, and Architecture Board mailing lists, as well as the GeoRSS list:

During the last OGC AB teleconference we discussed the possibility of using JavaScript Object Notation (JSON, http://json.org) as an alternative encoding to XML for some existing OGC specs, e.g. WMS/OWS Context and GML.

The AB thought that the best approach was to carry out some collabaritive experiments to test the JSON water. To this end I have set up the following: a wiki – at http://wiki.geojson.org - with some background information; a mailing list – at http://lists.geojson.org/listinfo.cgi/geojson-geojson.org; and a blog – at http://blog.geojson.org/ – with this e-mail as the only post so far.

I hope that GeoJSON can proceed in much the same way as GeoRSS did. That is, do the bulk of the work outside of the formal OGC procedures, but with the aim of releasing whatever GeoJSON becomes as an OGC White Paper. The primary benefit of being outside of the formal RFC process is that it will allow non-OGC input – both geospatial and JSON – from the start.

If you want to get actively involved then please go ahead and start wiki-ing the wiki (registration required), and posting to the list. If you want to have admin access to the sites and/or lists then please e-mail me directly.
